Testimonials

Christo took early notice of my child’s gifts and skills of the game and went out of his way to create an opportunity for them to meet one-on-one. His generous offer of time and experience in a private coaching setting amounted to 90 minutes of dedicated game play. It was especially heartwarming to see how much fun that time was — not only for my child — but for Christo. He genuinely loves what he does.

During their time together, Christo created tricky scenarios and skilled moves that would intentionally test what my child was capable of. He followed-up with clear instruction and praise where due. It was incredibly stimulating and challenging for my child in the best way possible. And receiving positive affirmation for the things he was doing right was a big confidence boost, too! All of that undivided attention and guidance was rich with quality feedback and tips on how to improve.

Christo has a very calm and friendly demeanor that makes the playing space feel safe and unthreatening. I really appreciate how much he cares about chess, his club members and providing continued opportunities for fun and growth. He is an excellent resource and a kind and experienced coach.

McMinnville is so lucky to have someone like Christo at the helm of McMinnville Chess Club. He is clearly very passionate about teaching and guiding aspiring chess players and has created a truly safe space where like-minded individuals can find community and connection. I appreciate how he models strong values around the game, such as good sportsmanship, respect and humility, especially considering how many youth frequent this club.

And it’s always wonderful to see multiple generations facing off on either side of the board. The older members of this club do such a great job at taking the younger ones under their wing and treating them with respect and care. There is so much teaching happening all the time.

Since becoming a part of the McMinnville Chess Club and observing the professional attitude and growth of players, I decided to get help for my son.

In the club’s vision of chess, Christefano Reyes wrote, “How chess teaches the skills for a successful life.” These ten points are the main reason I have hired him to teach the finer points of chess and life to my son.

I have witnessed firsthand, not only by watching / teaching others, but by playing against Christo myself, his desire and drive to reach higher.

Very simply, this is on-the-field coaching. As an example with my son, Christo says, “Is that the best move you could make?” Also, “Now that is a good move. Do you know why?”

Now, with the introduction of Blitz chess, the challenges are even deeper. Much like basketball’s shot clock, moves are made quicker and decisions must become automatic.

This is my recommendation, and why!
